Lyceum Theatre ready to Rev up for Summer

By Megan Lacelle

The Lyceum theatre is revving up for summer, literally. On May 9 it hosts the Eliminators Car Club from Swift Current for a day of fun and hopefully sun, said Wendy Klein, Manager of Gull Lake’s theatre.

“The Eliminators Car Club from Swift Current started the whole thing up for me,” she said. “They had a drag racing film, Snake and Mongoose, and there are a couple members who wanted to see it on the big screen with the big sound.”

They then asked Klein if they could rent the Lyceum theatre one afternoon to watch the film. Klein agreed, but soon realized the day could have so much more potential.

“I started thinking, we should take this a little further,” she laughed. So began the Revving up for Summer event.

Eliminators Car Club, who has their beginnings in the ‘70s, meets weekly to discuss their common interest in everything cars.

The day begins with a show and shine. Klein said the car club will start their cruise from Swift Current around 12:30.

“There will be any special interest vehicle there from antiques to hot rods to muscle cars,” Ron Schultz, vice president of the club, said. “Everyone’s welcome to bring their own car as well.”

Schultz said the club currently has 23 members.

“They love to talk cars with other people. They don’t keep their club so exclusive,” Klein said. “So if there’s people in our area who would love to show their machine off, then absolutely, they’re more than welcome.”

Then around 2 p.m. the theatre doors will open to show the true story of drag racers Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen. Set in the late ‘60s, it illustrates a story of two friends who became the greatest racing rivals in drag racing history. It stars Tim Blake Nelson and Jesse Williams. Everyone is welcome and theatre prices will remain regular.

Outside the theatre, Klein said they’ll be barbequing hot dogs and selling vintage Coke products, as a way of kicking off the summer.

“We want that good old-fashioned summer feeling,” she said. “You’ve got your sunshine, you’ve got your shiny cars out there, your barbequed hot dog and Coke. I just want people to feel like summer is coming. It’s a time to have fun.”

Attendees are welcome to spend the whole day visiting, eating food and looking at cars. Door prizes draws and give aways will be handed out during the afternoon. Sticking with the theme of fast cars, Lyceum Theatre will be playing Furious 7 at 8 pm.

Furious 7 continues to saga created 14 years ago with The Fast and the Furious. It stars Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker and just became the highest-grossing movie in China, rolling in more than $325 million.

May 9 will also host the first ever Gull Lake Bazaar. Held outside the museum, it begins Saturday at 10 a.m. and wraps up around 4 p.m. It’s open to anyone who wishes to sell anything from their homes, from South Hill Designs to antiques. More information can be found at gulllakesk.ca.

“May 9 isn’t that far away and it’s a perfect time to celebrate that summer is here and to do all the fun things,” Klein said.
